The City of Durango’s Capital Improvements Construction Management (CICM) Division is committed to excellence and fiscal responsibility. We manage capital improvement projects exceeding $50,000, ensuring they meet quality, schedule, and cost benchmarks while providing a minimum three-year depreciable life. We achieve this by overseeing all stages of construction, from pre-construction planning to final inspection.

To achieve this mission, we’re seeking a Senior Construction Inspector who shares our high standards and dedication to an effective infrastructure network. In this role, you’ll be responsible for delivering high-quality construction across our capital improvement projects. You’ll perform field inspections, review plans for constructability, and collaborate closely with City staff and contractors to provide seamless project execution. This includes training and guiding other CICM Inspectors in their assigned duties.

We invest in our team’s professional growth by covering the cost of required courses and certifications. Within your first year, you’ll have the opportunity to earn essential certifications, including your APWA Construction Inspection Workshop & Certificate, OSHA 10, First Aid/CPR/AED, Traffic Control Supervisor, Qualified Stormwater Manager, and Colorado Certified Water Professional Distribution 1 and Collections 1. We’ll support you with up to two attempts at certification exams, so you have the resources needed to succeed in this role.

What You’ll Do in This Role:

  • Review construction plans and perform field inspections to verify work follows approved designs, specifications, standards, and codes. Maintain accurate records of all inspections. Inspection items include:
    • Compliance with waterline disinfection and testing according to project specifications and American Water Works Association (AWWA) standards.
    • Adherence to temporary traffic controls based on approved plans and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD); recommend any necessary changes.
    • Adherence to Storm Water Management Plans (SWMP) per the Colorado MS4 permit.
    • Implementation of water management, pollution control measures, and stormwater improvements in line with regulatory requirements, including initial enforcement when necessary.
    • Confirmation that materials and on-site testing meet project requirements.
  • Work closely with CICM staff, contractors, and the public to provide information, support, and clarify construction-related impacts and regulations.
  • Gather field data as needed for plan revisions.
  • Train and guide the work of other Capital Improvements Construction Management (CICM) Inspectors, ensuring team compliance with local and state standards.
  • Assist in administering less complex engineering contracts, estimate contract quantities and costs; prepare change orders, as necessary.

You Have:

  • High school diploma or GED with additional college-level coursework in engineering, drafting, or a related field.
  • Five years of increasingly responsible experience in public works, construction, or technical engineering.
  • Two years in a supervisory role.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, testing and practices of modern public works construction, including civil, general building, and utility construction.
  • Skill in performing site inspections for a variety of infrastructure and building improvements, such as roadways, water mains, sanitary sewer mains, and storm drain construction and installation.

What We Can Offer You:

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Ample personal time off (PTO) and 11 paid holidays.
  • 401(a) retirement plan and optional deferred compensation plan.
  • Basic life insurance and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) coverage.
  • Long-term disability coverage.
  • Paid FMLA.
  • Access to Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

  • Free transit pass and family member discounts.
  • Reimbursement for job-related classes to foster continuous learning.
